The Key to Sure Progress: Daily D-I-D-S (part 2)
More
than ever, people are busy. Adults are busy. Kids are busy.
Students of all ages - busy.
In the city, there is so much available to do that
our practice time is often cheated by the glut of opportunity.
Facing this embarrassment of options, if we want to make
the most of our lesson time and investment, we will do well
to
spend our precious practice time efficiently. One proven
approach is to follow the path of DIDS - Diatonics, Intervals,
Devices, Songs - apportioning
our time conscientiously in these areas.
"Intervals"
are the DNA of music. All melodies and chords are composed
of intervals, so it makes sense to practice these musical
distances "in the raw," so to speak. (Keep your shirt
on.) Begin by moving single notes in half steps, then
in whole steps, minor and major thirds, and perfect fourths.
This creates a simple set of "interval maps" over which
we can then move harmonic intervals - 2nds, 3rds, 4ths,
etc. Next, we move simple chords - triads, seventh chords,
and inversions, following the interval maps. Finally,
we can move jazz chord shapes, turnarounds, and
so on, over the same interval maps. Chapter III of The
Road to Aqaba covers intervals in depth. For a printable pdf
